Third time's the charm for Peter Jackson's fantasy franchise

Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies scored a one-two box-office triumph in Germany, landing the best opening weekend of 2014 and the best opening for the franchise in the territory.

The third and final Hobbit film sold more than 1.5 million tickets in Germany over its five-day opening period, earning close to $20 million (€15 million). That compares to a €13.8 million opening weekend in Germany for the last Hobbit film, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and €11.5 million for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first feature in the franchise. The Desolation of Smaug went on to sell more than 6 million tickets in Germany for a $80 million (€64.3 million) gross, making it the most successful film in the territory last year.
