Yankees sign Chase Headley to four

The New York Yankees brought back third baseman Chase Headley on a four-year contract worth $52 million, according to a baseball official with direct knowledge of the agreement.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal is pending Headley passing a physical.

Headley, 30, was traded from the San Diego Padres in July and hit .262 with six home runs and 17 RBI in 58 games for the Yankees. In 2012, Headley hit 31 home runs with 115 RBI, finishing fifth in National League MVP voting. In the two years since, he's batted just .246 with a total of 26 home runs and 99 RBI.

With Alex Rodriguez coming off a season-long suspension, Headley's return seems to indicate the three-time MVP will see a considerable amount of time at designated hitter for the Yankees.
