Kentucky junior Alex Poythress suffers serious knee injury
Kentucky forward Alex Poythress has suffered a serious knee injury, a source confirmed to CBSSports.com early Friday. According to Lexington television station WKYT, the injury is a torn ACL that'll end Poythress' season.
UK officials have declined comment thus far.
Coach John Calipari is scheduled to discuss the injury Friday afternoon.
Poythress is averaging 5.5 points and 3.8 rebounds for the top-ranked Wildcats, who are 10-0 with 10 double-digit wins. The 6-foot-8 junior has started all eight games he's appeared in to date. He missed two games earlier this season with an undisclosed illness.
'I can't describe how much I feel for [Poythress],' UK's Aaron Harrison posted on Instagram. 'He's not only my teammate but he's one of my best friends, and it's really sad to see him down. But, on the bright side, we all know that he's going to come back even stronger!'
Losing Poythress wouldn't be ideal, for obvious reasons. But the Wildcats do have four frontcourt players (Willie Cauley-Stein, Karl-Anthony Towns, Dakari Johnson, Trey Lyles) averaging more points than him and another projected pro (Marcus Lee) deeper on the bench. In other words, this would hardly be a devastating blow to UK the way Nerlens Noel's torn ACL was a devastating blow to UK in the 2012-13 season. Still, what it would do is chip away at Kentucky's depth, which is the Wildcats' strongest attribute.
Kentucky plays North Carolina Saturday.
That game is scheduled to tip at noon ET on CBS.
