Nebraska hires Mike Riley from Oregon State as new football coach
Nebraska has pulled a stunner in its search for a head coach, announcing Thursday via Twitter it has hired Oregon State's Mike Riley to replace Bo Pelini.
Riley, 61, just completed his 14th season at Oregon State, which was broken up by a three-year stint in the middle as head coach of the San Diego Chargers. Riley's team finished 5-7 this season, but he has long been considered one of college football's upper-tier coaches because of his consistent record of success at one of the Pac 12's most difficult jobs.
Riley is 93-80 overall at Oregon State with nine bowl appearances.
Because of Riley's age and long association with the Corvallis, Ore., area -- he played quarterback at Corvallis High and his father was an assistant coach at Oregon State -- it seemed unlikely he would ever move.
Nebraska athletics director Shawn Eichorst moved stealthily in his coaching search. There had been no speculation involving Riley and Nebraska since the job opened last weekend.
