Tuesday Ratings: 'Victoria's Secret,' 'Rudolph' Guide CBS to Victory

CBS decisively beat its rivals in key demos on Tuesday behind its annual airings of ' Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer ' and 'Victoria's Secret Fashion Show,' while ABC's 'Marvel's Agents of SHIELD' joined CW's dramas and Fox's comedies in wrapping fall on the high end of their ratings ranges.

Ratings will be released later Wednesday for FX's 'Sons of Anarchy,' which is expected to challenge as the night's top show in some categories.

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' averaged a timeslot-leading 2.8 rating/9 share in adults 18-49 while drawing 10.7 million viewers overall - down a bit in the demo from its year-ago telecast, though last year it didn't have to face NBC's 'The Voice' or a competing holiday special on ABC ('Santa Claus is Comin' to Town'). Head-to-head, it beat 'The Voice' in 18-49 (2.8 vs. 2.2) and 25-54 (3.9 vs. 3.0).

'Rudolph' was followed by a repeat of 'NCIS' at a special time (1.7/5 in 18-49, 10.2 million viewers overall) and the 10 p.m. special 'Victoria's Secret Fashion Show' (3.3/10 in 18-49, 9.1 million viewers overall), which was down a tick in 18-49 from last year. 'Victoria's Secret' dominated its broadcast competition and did a staggering 5.1/17 in women 18-34 - the highest rating for any broadcast entertainment program since the season premiere of ABC's 'Scandal' in September (5.3).

NBC, which has been the Tuesday leader this fall in young adults, took a backseat last night. 'The Voice' (2.2/7 in 18-49, 10.9 million viewers overall) placed second in demos and edged out 'Rudolph' in total viewers at 8, hitting a Tuesday season low one night after posting its lowest Monday rating of the fall. That resulted in lower numbers for 9 p.m. half-hours 'Marry Me' (1.2/4 in 18-49, 4.9 million viewers overall) and 'About a Boy' (0.9/3 in 18-49, 3.7 million viewers overall).

The Peacock closed the night quietly too with an NBC News special on Angelina Jolie and her 'Unbroken' movie (1.0/3 in 18-49, 4.7 million viewers overall).

Fox's 'MasterChef Junior' remains a consistently solid player (1.6/5 in 18-49, 4.9 million viewers overall) and is likely contributing to the recent improvement for 'New Girl' (1.5/4 in 18-49, 3.3 million viewers overall) and 'The Mindy Project' (1.2/3 in 18-49, 2.6 million viewers overall), both of which beat their NBC half-hour competition by 0.3 in 18-49 and had their best scores in more than a month.

At ABC, the holiday special 'Santa Claus is Comin' to Town' (1.1/3 in 18-49, 4.2 million viewers overall) was followed by the fall finale of 'Marvel's Agents of SHIELD' (1.7/5 in 18-49, 5.2 million viewers overall), which figures to match last week's 1.8 national rating, which was the show's best number since its second-season premiere in September (2.0). It finished comfortably ahead of the comedies on Fox and NBC, while likely edging out CBS' 'NCIS' repeat in 18-49.

'Forever' capped the night for ABC (1.1/3 in 18-49, 5.1 million viewers overall), on par with its recent average. Though it didn't have to face either of its regular timeslot competitors, 'Chicago Fire' or 'Person of Interest,' the first-year drama was up against 'Victoria's Secret' as well as the series finale of FX's 'Sons of Anarchy.'

One week after the start of a two-night ' The Flash'/'Arrow' crossover storyline produced robust ratings, 'Flash' (1.5/5 in 18-49, 4.5 million viewers overall) actuall rose 4% week to week in total viewers for its most watched episode since its series premiere. And ' Supernatural ' (1.1/3 in 18-49, 2.8 million viewers overall) matched its season high in 18-49 while delivering its top men 18-34 rating (1.3) and largest overall audience in more than four years.

CW tied ABC on the night in 18-49 and placed second to CBS among the broadcasters for the night in men 18-34.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: CBS, 2.6/8; NBC and Fox, 1.4/4; ABC and CW, 1.3/4; Univision, 0.9/3; Telemundo, 0.5/2.

In total viewers: CBS, 10.0 million; NBC, 6.6 million; ABC, 4.8 million; Fox, 3.9 million; CW, 3.7 million; Univision, 2.5 million; Telemundo, 1.3 million.
