Will Muschamp interviewed for Houston Cougars head coaching job

The former Florida coach and Texas defensive coordinator could return to the Lone Star State.

The Houston Cougars have interviewed former Florida coach Will Muschamp about their vacant head coaching position, a source tells SB Nation. The news was first reported by the Houston Chronicle's Joseph Duarte.

Muschamp would be pursuing an annual salary of $2 million, with a $500,000 budget for assistants, according to one source. He's also considered a top defensive coordinator target throughout the SEC.

If hired, the defensive expert would replace Tony Levine. Muschamp would become the first defense-oriented coach to lead the Cougars in 25 years.

Muschamp was 28-21 in four years as head coach at Florida, winning 11 games and a share of the SEC East crown in his second season. In the two following seasons, Muschamp's teams went 10-13. Prior to joining the Gators, Muschamp had served as defensive coordinator at Texas, Auburn and LSU.

Houston fired Tony Levine on Monday after a 7-5 campaign in 2014. In three seasons with the Cougars, Levine was 21-17 overall, twice qualifying for a bowl. In an official statement, Houston A.D. Mack Rhodes praised Levine for 'leaving the program better than when he arrived,' but stated that 'the expectations of our program have changed over the last five years with the opening of TDECU Stadium and the current college football landscape.'

TDECU Stadium, a state of the art 40,000 seat on-campus stadium built an estimated cost of $120 million, opened in September with a 27-7 Houston loss to UTSA.

The 43-year-old Muschamp grew up in Georgia and has coached throughout the South. His prior experience in Texas was his three-year stint with the Longhorns.
