The A's will turn to rookie Sonny Gray to start the decisive Game 5 of the ALDS against the Tigers on Thursday night, manager Bob Melvin announced Wednesday.
Melvin chose Gray, the right-hander who blanked the Tigers for eight innings in Game 2, over 40-year-old Bartolo Colon, who suffered a 3-2 loss in Game 1.
Detroit will start 2012 Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander, who threw a shutout against the A's in Game 5 of last year's ALDS in Oakland.
