Anibal Sanchez to start Game 1 for Tigers
Sanchez struggled in his first 2013 post-season start.
Detroit Tigers pitcher Anibal Sanchez will start Game 1 of the ALCS against the Boston Red Sox, manager Jim Leyland told Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports.
Sanchez turned in a career year for the Tigers, going 14-8 with an AL-best 2.57 ERA. He fanned 202 batters over 182 innings, only issuing 54 walks. He also kept the ball in the park, surrendering nine home runs during the regular season.
The right-hander started Game 3 of the ALDS against the Oakland Athletics. He flashed overpowering stuff, striking out six over 4 1/3 innings. Oakland did crush the ball when they made contact, tagging Sanchez for six runs on eight hits. He uncharacteristically surrendered five extra base-hits, including three home runs.
Sanchez and the Red Sox did not face each other during the regular season and have only squared off once during his eight-year career.
Game 1 of the ALDS is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, with FOX televising the game.
