Detroit Tigers' Miguel Cabrera to undergo surgery this week to repair groin tear

Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera will undergo surgery to repair a groin tear this week, according to Peter Gammons of the MLB Network.

Cabrera was awarded the Hank Aaron Award, which is given to the most outstanding offensive performer in each league, for the second consecutive season. He received the award Sunday prior to the start of Game 4 of the World Series.

Cabrera spoke about the award and his injury during a press conference in St. Louis and explained why he felt resting the injury during the season was not an option.

'We checked with doctors,' he said. 'We got a lot of different opinions. If somebody had told me that if I rested 15 days, I'd be OK, I'd have rested 15 days. They didn't tell me that.'

According to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com, Cabrera said he would see doctors this week and then decide whether he would have surgery. But Gammons reported via his Twitter account that Cabrera will have surgery.

Cabrera battled an abdominal injury throughout the month of August, but he still produced at his normal level during that time and was named American League Player of the Month. But he hurt his groin sliding into second base in a game against the Chicago White Sox in early September and was not the same player after that point.

Cabrera hit .278 with a .729 OPS and had just two extra-base hits in September after batting .356 with a 1.162 OPS in August. He hit .262 with a .716 OPS in 11 playoff games in October.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said Monday that Cabrera had a Grade 2 or Grade 3 groin tear and that he might have to undergo surgery. A Grade 2 strain involves the tearing of 10 to 90 percent of fibers. A Grade 3 strain involves the partial or total rupture of the groin.

Cabrera's teammates were impressed that he battled through the injury.

'He wasn't 100 percent for the whole last month and a half,' Justin Verlander said the night the Tigers were eliminated from the American League playoffs by the Boston Red Sox. 'In my book, that makes him every bit more the MVP than it would have otherwise. I think 90 percent of baseball players would have been sitting on the couch, not playing, dealing with what he's dealt with this year.'
