Latest Bridget Jones Novel Was Written In Total Secret, Writer Reveals

The author of the Bridget Jones books, Helen Fielding, has revealed that she actually wrote her latest novel about the neurotic singleton - 'Mad About The Boy' - in total secret.

The writer says that she kept the fact she was writing the latest instalment of the bestselling set of novels quiet in order to take some of the pressure off herself.

Speaking to the BBC's Jon Sopel. she said: 'I waited until a story came to me... then I wrote it secretly without telling anyone so I could just write it like I wrote the first one.'

'Mad About The Boy' is the long-awaited sequel to the Bridget Jones saga. The story sees the heroine - who is now 51 - raising two children, tweeting, texting and spending hours on online shopping.

Unfortunately the book hasn't been well received, with The Telegraph newspaper calling it a 'clunking disappointment'.

The main problem critics seemed to have with the latest novel was the fact that the author has killed off Bridget's loving husband Mark Darcy.

Fans took to Twitter in their droves to complain about the shock decision.

One disgruntled fan ranted: 'One word for Helen Fielding: why?!'

Another added: 'What the hell is Helen fielding playing at in the next bridget jones book!?'

One tweeter even claimed that her birthday was ruined after hearing the news: 'Saw the news about the Bridget Jones sequel, it comes out on my birthday and Mark Darcy is DEAD!!!! Awful news #birthdayruined'.

Fielding's first book Bridget Jones's Diary was published in 1996 and a sequel Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason was released three years later.

In 2001, a film adaptation starring American actress Renee Zellweger, with Hugh Grant as womanising Daniel Cleaver and Colin Firth as Darcy, was released.
