ST. LOUIS - Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino was originally in his customary spot in the Red Sox lineup for Game 4 of the World Series, batting second between Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia.
Then, about an hour and 15 minutes before Game 4, the Red Sox announced he had been replaced in the lineup by Jonny Gomes -- who will hit fifth and play left, with Daniel Nava shifting to second and right, respectively.
Victorino is out due to lower back tightness, officially, the Red Sox have said. Prior to that, they just said he was feeling a bit 'banged up.'
The 32 year old is coming off an excellent regular season, but back issues have already caused him to stop switch hitting and work exclusively as a right hander in the box.
It may be catching up with him overall, too, because in the ALCS and World Series combined, Victorino is hitting .088/.184/.206. He hasn't had a hit in the entire World Series thus far.
