Telefonica to Pre

Pinterest has teamed up with Telefonica to offer the pinning app as a widget on Android phones offered by the carrier.

That includes those on Telefonica's Vivo, O2, and Movistar services. In most Telefonica territories, the widget will be pre-installed on Android phones. But in the U.K., the widget will be found in the O2 Recommends and the Android Widget folder, as well as promoted through multiple channels.

O2 U.K. customers will be the first to see the Pinterest widget via Google Play, while pre-loading begins in the coming weeks.

'Interests are global, which is why we want Pinterest to be available wherever people want to find ideas for the everyday projects in their lives and get inspired for the future,' Don Faul, head of operations for Pinterest. 'Telefonica is one of the world's most advanced communications companies, and together we can provide a one-of-a-kind mobile experience to new and existing pinners around the globe.'

New users will see most popular pins, while those who sign in will see their personal feed and instant notifications.

For those who are not interested in pinning, the add-on veers into bloatware territory. But for Pinterest, it's a nice way to get more users as it competes against social behemoths like Facebook and Twitter.

The announcement comes about a month after Pinterest announced a test of promoted pins, which the company promised would not be intrusive, but tasteful, transparent, relevant, and improved based on user feedback.

More recently, the company also rolled out a new look for article pins, complete with more information like headline, author, story description, and link.
