Tigers hit controversial, fan

Umpires review close call in ALDS matchup.

In the bottom of the seventh inning of the ALDS Game 4 matchup between the A's and the Tigers, Detroit slugger Victor Martinez launched a ball to deep right field. A's outfielder Josh Reddick appeared to line it up and jumped for the ball just as a fan in the front row reached out to grab it.

Note that the yellow line marks the home run boundary, not the metal fence above it. And even after watching it over and over again, it's tough to tell whether Reddick had a shot at it. It looks like it certainly would have been a homer were Reddick not there.

Umpires reviewed the play and ruled it a home run. The run tied the game at four apiece as the Tigers fight to stay alive in the ALDS.

Martinez gets the glory, but the real hero here is the Tigers fan in the sunglasses. Is it that bright out in Detroit at about 6:20 p.m. CT? Probably not. But when you're cool, the sun's always shining on you.
