Bumgarner named Giants opening day starter
Matt Cain's run as opening day starter lasted just one season. Madison Bumgarner, 24 years old and the only left-hander on the starting staff, will take the ball March 31 in Phoenix against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
'He had a real nice year and he hasn't done it before,' manager Bruce Bochy said. 'I wanted to reward Madison for a great year. I wanted him to check off this box.'
Bochy said he talked to Bumgarner and Cain about the choice, and pointed out that while Cain struggled in the first half, he was spectacular after the All-Star break, posting a 2.36 ERA. Bumgarner, however, was a rock throughout the 76-86 season, going 13-9 with a 2.77 ERA. He was named to his first All-Star team, too.
'There are no egos in this group,' Bochy said. 'Matt is fine with it, great with it. We've had a lot of success with Matt being the No. 2 guy.'
Bumgarner will start Friday's Cactus League game. Cain, Tim Hudson, Tim Lincecum and Ryan Vogelsong will round out the spring rotation in that order. Bochy said the Giants still could tweak the middle of the rotation, which currently has Hudson in line for the April 8 home opener.
