Left-hander Madison Bumgarner will be the starting pitcher for the Giants on opening day this season, the club announced Tuesday afternoon. So he'll be getting the ball Monday, March 31 when the Giants face the Diamondbacks in Arizona.
Once Bumgarner has made the start -- his first career opening-day assignment -- that'll give the Giants four starters in the rotation who have been opening-day starters, along with Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum and Tim Hudson.
Bumgarner was 13-9 with a 2.77 ERA (120 ERA+), 1.03 WHIP and 199 strikeouts in 201 1/3 innings last season. He made his first All-Star team and finished ninth in NL Cy Young voting. Though only 24 years old, he's worked at least 200 innings in each of the past three seasons.
