'True Blood' Composer Plans Musical Adaptation
This adaptation bites - but in a good way. After True Blood wraps its seventh and final season, the popular HBO vampire drama will be adapted into a musical, the Associated Press reports. Series composer Nathan Barr (who worked on all seven seasons) pitched the idea to HBO and True Blood creator Alan Ball with musical samples, and he hopes to unveil a workshop version next year.
'True Blood' and 16 Other Shows That Lasted Too Long
Barr says he wants the musical to 'return to the roots of the show' and focus on the series' main character, telepath-waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), but he's encountered some logistical challenges trimming down the seven-season show into a focused production. But Barr's had help from a True Blood veteran: Stephen Moyer, who plays vampire Bill Compton on the show (and is an accomplished singer), helped the composer iron out some musical samples for their initial pitch.
'There's no guarantees,' Barr said, speaking of a possible Broadway run. 'But I think the direction we're heading in is really exciting.'
In the meantime, True Blood still has some campy, blood-sucking unfinished business back on television. Season Seven is set to premiere Sunday, June 22nd at 9 p.m. ET. Last September, executive producer Brian Buckner revealed the grim news that the seventh season would be the show's last. He did, however, promise that his team would 'do [their] very best to bring Sookie's story to a close with heart, imagination and, of course, fun.'
