Baseball roundup: Jon Lester, Jonny Gomes lead A's past Royals

Jon Lester won his Oakland debut while pitching into the seventh inning and Jonny Gomes got two hits during an eight-run burst in his return to the Athletics as they beat the Kansas City Royals, 8-3, Saturday in Oakland.



Two days after being traded from the sagging World Series champion Red Sox, Lester and Gomes teamed up to boost the club with the best record in baseball.


Fans in the crowd of 30,097 cheered the 6-foot-4 Lester (11-7) as he went through his warm-up routine, then he tipped his cap to a roaring ovation when he left after 6 2/3 innings.


Back with the AL West-leading A's, Gomes delivered in an eight-run fifth inning. He singled and scored off Jason Vargas (8-5), then hit a hit a two-run single off Aaron Crow.


Lester gave up three runs and nine hits, walking one and striking out three.


MARINERS 6, ORIOLES 3 (at Baltimore) - Robinson Cano hit a three-run homer, Dustin Ackley had a solo shot and Seattle got an effective outing from its bullpen.


TIGERS 11, ROCKIES 5 (at Detroit) - Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez homered, and Rick Porcello (13-5) struck out 10 and tied Detroit teammate Max Scherzer for the AL lead in victories.


ASTROS 8, BLUE JAYS 2 (at Houston) - Jon Singleton had inside-the-park home run, and Chris Carter and Jason Castro also homered for Houston.


RAYS 10, ANGELS 3 (at St. Petersburg, Fla.) - Evan Longoria hit a two-run homer, Ben Zobrist got four hits and Tampa Bay roughed up C.J. Wilson.


TWINS 8, WHITE SOX 6 (at Chicago) - Trevor Plouffe got four hits and Minnesota stopped Jose Abreu's hitting streak at 21 games and ended its three-game skid.


INDIANS 2, RANGERS 0 (at Cleveland) - Lonnie Chisenhall and Nick Swisher delivered RBI singles in the sixth, and five pitchers combined on a five-hitter for Cleveland.


CARDINALS 9, BREWERS 7 (at St. Louis) - Kolten Wong broke out of a slump with a home run and three RBI and Justin Masterson won his St. Louis debut.


NATIONALS 11, PHILLIES 0 (at Washington) - Anthony Rendon homered and drove in four, and Jordan Zimmermann pitched seven scoreless for Washington.


MARLINS 2, REDS 1, 10 inns. (at Miami) - Christian Yelich's RBI single snapped Miami's three-game skid.


PIRATES 8, DIAMONDBACKS 3 (at Phoenix) - Andrew McCutchen drove in the go-ahead run with an infield single in the eighth, as Pittsburgh beat Arizona. Diamondbacks All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt (broken left hand) was placed on the 15-day DL.
