Goldschmidt fractures left hand, placed on DL
PHOENIX -- The D-backs may not have only lost their game against the Pirates on Friday -- they may have also lost their All-Star first baseman.
Pirates pitcher Ernesto Frieri hit Paul Goldschmidt in the left hand with a 93-mph fastball in the ninth inning of the D-backs' 9-4 loss. Goldschmidt stayed in the game, and he said postgame X-rays were inconclusive. However, his hand was wrapped in ice when he spoke to the media after the game.
Goldschmidt will be re-evaluated on Saturday.
'I've never had any broken bones or fractures or anything like that,' Goldschmidt said. 'It felt OK, but obviously there's still some pain because it hit it pretty good.
'I don't know what it would feel like if it was or wasn't anything wrong with it.'
Goldschmidt said he didn't think the pitch from Frieri was intended to hit him.
'The guy's got to try to get outs,' Goldschmidt said. 'What do you want him to do? Just throw it down the middle? They pitch inside as a team. We do it, too.'
Goldschmidt wasn't in the starting lineup on Friday -- manager Kirk Gibson wanted to give him a day off -- and didn't enter the game until he came in as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning. But Goldschmidt isn't one to curse his bad luck for getting hit in his only at-bat.
'It's part of the game, getting hit, so I'm going to stay positive and think it'll be OK,' Goldschmidt said. 'I guess we'll find out, hopefully tomorrow. But it's jut part of the game. This stuff happens, and hopefully it's not broken.'
