Google Buys Gecko Design for next

Google is going big guns and is all set to produce cutting edge technology products like Google glass and Balloons for Internet access. Google has acquired Gecko Design and it will now become a part of the Search Engine Giant's unit developing cutting-edge products.

The terms of the deal has not been made public but what we know is that Gecko President Jacques Gagne and its four other employees will join Google's 'X' research division next month. Google X is the research division which has given Glass and balloons for internet access. It is also involved in the development of self driving car and contact lenses for measuring the blood glucose levels.

Founded in 1996 Gecko is headquartered in Los Gatos California and is specialized in developing consumer electronics products. Gecko's clients have include big names such as FitBit Inc., Logitech International S.A., Sonos Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co.

Google X needs the expertise of Gecko as it plunges into creating consumer and commercial products by using cutting-edge technology. The result includes Google Glass, the wearable computer; Iris, the smart contact lens which can monitor blood glucose levels and Google Loon, the high altitude balloons that provide Internet access to remote locations.

Mr. Gagné said, 'We're a piece that Google X doesn't necessarily have. People come to Gecko because they don't know how to turn ideas into real products, especially when it's something that hasn't been done before. That's what attracted Google X.'

Gecko has in the past also worked on the One Laptop per Child project, and is also helping to design cheap computers for kids in third world countries. Mr. Gagne said that the challenge was to create a laptop which could be dropped on the ground and should cost less than $100.

Gecko is working with Google X on a project since 2013 though he did not specify the details. Acquisition talks were commenced in 2014 though it took some time to hammer out the details.
