'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Had A Record Breaking Opening Weekend
Well: we were expecting good, but not this good. ' Guardians of the Galaxy' has not only exceeded expectations, it's damn near destroyed them, earning $94 million at the box office, making it the biggest August debut weekend, ever. By a lot. TODAY, WE ARE ALL GROOT!
Do you realize what a big deal this is? It's not even a major Marvel property - it's the quirky cousin of all the other superhero business Marvel usually puts out, filled with a cavalcade of weirdos like an ornery raccoon and an adorable walking tree. See? The power of good storytelling is real.
The James Gunn-directed science fiction film is now the third largest opening of the year, coming in second only to 'Transformers: Age Of Extinction' and 'Captain America: The First Avenger.' Guess they're glad they already confirmed a sequel, huh? (Because, I mean, we sure are.)
But it didn't just do well here in the states, the film also racked up an impressive $66.4 million overseas, making its grand worldwide total $160.4 million. Well snap, crackle, pop!
People are loving the film so it's no surprise that it did well, though most folks were anticipating it would make more around the $68 million mark. But now with any luck it'll hold onto this momentum and possibly/maybe even crack the $250 million domestic mark, which would be a very impressive feat indeed (no other film has done that this year, in fact).
Looks like this confirms Chris Pratt as a bona fide movie star. In fact he may just become so popular he needs a security detail - sounds like a job for Burt Macklin, don't you think?
