Radwanska and Stephens Exit as US Open Heats Up

Agnieszka Radwanska and New York have never fit well with each other, despite her sense of style and improvisation on the tennis court.

They have not had much time over the years to get to know each other better, and the relationship was short-lived again. The fourth-seeded Radwanska became the highest seed to lose so far at the United States Open, falling, 6-3, 6-4, to Peng Shuai of China in the second round Wednesday.

In nine U.S. Open appearances, Radwanska has lost in the second round five times and never advanced past the fourth round.

But this hardcourt season held more promise after Radwanska won the Rogers Cup in Montreal this month and reached the quarterfinals at the Cincinnati event a week later.

'A lot of good matches against top players and a couple of good wins,' Radwanska, 25, said after her first-round victory, adding that the wins made her 'more confident than before.'

Shuai, a 28-year-old ranked 39th, defeated a top-five opponent for only the fourth time in 26 matches and for the first time since 2011.
