RGIII Aims to Learn Some Lessons From Tom Brady During Joint Practices
RICHMOND, Va. — He's said it once and he'll say it again: there's a lot to learn from Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III is almost effusive in his praise of Brady. But he can only pay attention to the Patriots starting quarterback for so long, a point he hammered home after finishing his team's joint training camp practice at Bon Secours Training Center in Richmond, Va.
'Yeah, you know I got a chance to talk to him,' Griffin III said. 'He was in there interacting with the team, his team and our team, just talking to people. Just to see them work. But at the same time, when they're out there on the field, we get to watch what they're doing a little bit, but at the same time we're still trying to discuss what we're trying to do on offense. That's not really a time for us to watch him like we're at a zoo.'
Griffin III, fully healed and efficient in Monday's 11-on-11 drills against the Patriots' starting defense, said it was astounding that Brady had been able to stay in the same offense for 15 years.
'That's amazing,' he said. 'They've been able to pull guys in. They've got two quick, sudden receivers in [Danny] Amendola and [Julian] Edelman. They've got a lot of good pieces there. But at the same time I will evaluate them because that's what quarterbacks do. But at the same time, I'm still focused on what we're doing as an offense.'
Griffin added, '[Brady] said it's only my third year. He said I've got a lot of football left in me. That's big coming from a guy like him. I appreciate that.'
While both quarterbacks will be busy in preparation for this week's practices and first preseason game, Griffin III said he still hopes to sit down with Brady and pick his brain.
'Hopefully I'll get a chance to sit down with him if he's not too busy. We'll both be watching a lot of film and getting ready for tomorrow's practice. But hopefully I get that chance. The sky's the limit. We can do a lot of great things.'
Other things of note from Griffin III:
- On the practice: 'I think everybody came out here, our team obviously, ready to go. We showed that we are a physical football team. We ran the ball extremely well. And I thought we pass protected pretty good as well. To go against other guys is a great. We had a chance to go against [Brandon] Browner and [Darrelle] Revis, two of the best corners in the game, and we had two of the best corners in the game on our side with [DeAngelo Hall] and [David Amerson]. It was a lot of fun.'
- On the physicality of the Patriots' defensive backs: 'No doubt. It challenges you as an offense to be efficient. We had some plays today where we were on. And I think we had more where we were on than when we weren't. But we also had some plays where we can get better on. And that's just what it is about, football and practicing every day. There's always going to be something. It's not like golf. You can go really bad for 17 holes, but on 18, umph, you get a birdie, you're back the next day. So you just go to keep working at it. That's what it is. That's why it's football.'
- On why Darrelle Revis is so difficult to throw on: 'He's a good corner. Quick feet. He understands the game. He's been playing for awhile now. Understands concepts. He breaks some things. There's a couple that he knocked down today and there's a couple that we got him on. But at the same time, he's a guy you have to throw at him because you don't want to isolate just one side of the field. And then the luxury that the Pats have is that Browner is on the other side of the field who is a man. I think we did a good job today against both corners and I think they had their fair share of good plays, too.'
