Former Tennessee Titans kicker Rob Bironas had a blood alcohol level of .218 percent on the night of his fatal car crash, a toxicology report obtained by the Tennessean revealed on Friday. Bironas' BAC was more than 2.5 times above the legal limit of .08 percent.
Bironas' wife, Rachel Bradshaw, told police that Bironas may have had one beer over the course of the night, but that she didn't see him drink anything else.
The single-car crash that killed Bironas on Sept. 20 happened less than one mile from his residence. Bironas' vehicle went off the road and hit several trees before coming to rest upside down in a drainage culvert. Bironas was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A woman, who called 911 on the night of the crash, said she that Bironas tried to run her off the road and that he looked drunk.
'He is dangerous, he is drunk or something. He tried to start a fight with us,' the woman said in the 911 call. 'My husband ran down there to see what is going on. I just want to tell the police there is something wrong with him. He is dangerous, he is drunk or he is on drugs. He gave us a mean look. We don't even know him, and he tried to run us off the road.'
The woman wasn't the only person who claimed that Bironas tried to run her off the road. A group of Belmont University students said that Bironas tried to run them off the road after threatening to kill them.
'His window was down, and we pulled up and I said, 'Hey man, just a heads up, something's burning from your exhaust. Your exhaust smells horrible, just wanted to let you know,'' one of the students said he told Bironas. 'He looked over at me and said, 'I'm going to kill everybody in your (expletive) vehicle.' It was so random, so bizarre I was like, 'What?' And he said the exact same thing again.'
Police also noted that Bironas had a small amount of valium in his system. However, the medical examiner said it was such a low level that it wouldn't have had any effect on the former kicker.
The Titans announced on Thursday that the team plans to honor Bironas before Sunday's game against Cleveland. Bironas finished his career as the second leading scorer in Titans franchise history.
