LeBron James says he could wear Eric Garner protest shirt vs. Nets

NEW YORK - LeBron James might make a statement under the bright lights at Barclays Center on Monday night. A statement that has nothing to do with basketball.
Saturday, Bulls star Derrick Rose wore an 'I Can't Breathe' protest shirt during warmups, acknowledging the controversial, chokehold death of Eric Garner at the hands of the police in Staten Island earlier this year..
James, the biggest star in basketball, called Rose's shirt 'spectacular' and said he might wear one when his Cavaliers play in Brooklyn against the Nets on Monday night.
'It's possible,' James said of Rose's. 'I'm looking for one. I think it was great. ... I loved it.'
James added twice more that he is 'looking' to get his hands on the same shirt.
Wednesday, a grand jury decided not to indict the officer in Garner's July death, leading to protests around the country. Video of the fatal incident captured Garner on the ground, saying 'I can't breathe' while being restrained by several police officers.
Detroit Lions running back Reggie Bush wrote 'I Can't Breathe' in black marker on his shirt as he prepared for his game Sunday morning. Cleveland Browns cornerback Johnson Bademosi did the same. .
Earlier this week, before the Cavs played the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, James was outspoken about Garner's death and the ensuing protests.
'This is our country, the land of the free, and we keep having these incidents happen, innocent victims or whatever the case may be,' James said Thursday morning at Madison Square Garden. 'Our families are losing loved ones. I'm not pointing the blame at anybody that's making it happen. In society, we've come a long way, but it just goes to show how much further we still have to go.'
'It's a sensitive subject right now,' James also said earlier this week. 'Violence is not the answer; retaliation isn't the solution. As a society, we just have to do better.'
Many athletes of James' stature - including Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan - have kept their opinions on social matters to themselves. But James views it differently.
'It doesn't matter if you are an athlete or not,' James said Thursday. 'If it hits home for you, then you have the right to speak on it.' - See more at: http://ift.tt/1waq3Ep
