Tulsa fires coach Bill Blankenship after 2

Tulsa has fired coach Bill Blankenship after four seasons, the school announced Monday.

Blankenship, a Tulsa alum and longtime high school coach in the area, had initial success after taking over for Todd Graham in 2011, winning 19 of his first 27 games. But Tulsa nose-dived to 3-9 last season and 2-10 this season as it moved from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference, prompting the change.

Though Tulsa is the smallest school in the Football Bowl Subdivision with roughly 3,200 undergraduate students, it finished with a winning record all but two years between 2003 and 2012.

Several high-profile assistants have Tulsa ties including Penn State offensive line coach/running game coordinator Herb Hand, who both worked as offensive coordinators under Graham. Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee is from nearby Northwest Arkansas and works closely with Gus Malzahn, who was Tulsa's offensive coordinator in 2007 and 2008.

TCU co-offensive coordinator Doug Meachem could also be a candidate.
