Valve launches Steam Broadcasting in beta
Valve has launched Steam Broadcast, a new live streaming feature that lets you watch your friends play games directly via the Steam client.
The feature is available now via Steam's opt-in beta program. Once updated, users will be able to select a new 'Watch Game' option within their friends list or on friends' profile page to instantly pull up a live stream of that friends' gameplay.
'No game ownership, special fees, or additional apps [are] required,' confirms Valve in the announcement.
'As always, Valve is interested in all feedback and ideas on how to make this feature better.'
Streaming has exploded in popularity in the past two years since the rise of dedicated streaming website Twitch. But getting a decent stream up and running via Twitch can require a convoluted combination of third party apps and configuration options.
Steam Broadcasting appears to provide a level of simplicity similar to that of the PS4 and Xbox One streaming options.
There's no word on if players might later be able to broadcast their stream to a wider audience outside of their friends list.
Back in September Valve launched a significant update for the Steam Store in an effort to make shopping its gargantuan games library easier. Dubbed the 'Steam Discovery Update', the new Steam Store includes a completely new Home page that contains personalized content.
