Backhoe knocks down power poles; workers trapped, road closed

SEATTLE - Seattle City Light officials said three individuals would be trapped under wire for at least an hour after a backhoe knocked over four power poles around 12 p.m. Monday near a construction area on Denny Way.

Four lines were cut down when workers backed into a light pole near the intersection of Denny Way and Minor Avenue. No one was immediately reported injured in the accident, but three people were trapped in a dump truck under the downed lines, officials said. They were expected to be trapped for about an hour, as Seattle City Light workers have to dig underground to shut off the power.

Denny Way between Fairview Street and Stewart Street were expected to be closed for 10-12 hours as City Light employees worked to clear the downed poles. A portion of John Street was also expected to be closed for some time.
