Report: Matt Schaub almost benched this week, on short leash Sunday
Matt Schaub has four pick-sixes this season. (USATSI) Texans quarterback Matt Schaub probably thought he hit rock bottom back in Week 4 following his game-deciding pick-six against the Seahawks. Turns out, he wasn't there yet. He threw another pick-six seven days later in another loss, this time a blowout by the 49ers.
Mercifully, coach Gary Kubiak benched Schaub late in that game for backup T.J. Yates, but Schaub has maintained his tenuous hold on the job for Sunday's game against the Rams. For how long, is another matter, however.
Schaub will be on a short leash, according to NFL.com. Not only was he nearly replaced in the lineup this week by Yates, but should Schaub struggle against the Rams, Michael Silver reports that his 'benching could come at any time -- even in-game -- and on a permanent basis.'
'It was a tough decision, real tough, but I feel like it's the best thing for our team,' Kubiak said this week of his decision to not bench Schaub (via the Houston Chronicle). 'A lot of thought went into it. I talked to him about my process so he understands where I'm coming from. We talk a lot. It's not like that's the first time we've talked.'
Schaub, meanwhile, is only focused on what he can control.
'I never was worried about that,' he said about the possibility of getting benched for Yates. 'I'm the quarterback of this team. I've worked very hard to be in this position. My focus is to give my team a chance to win on Sunday.'
This could be Schaub's last best chance to prove that.
