The Houston Texans will bench quarterback Matt Schaub if he struggles once again on Sunday against the St. Louis Rams, according to a report on NFL.com.
Schaub has thrown nine interceptions on the season and has thrown a pick-six interception in an NFL-record four straight games. The Texans, who started off the season with wins over the Chargers and Titans, have now lost three straight games and have struggled significantly on offense in key games against the Ravens and 49ers.
According to NFL Network's Michael Silver, Schaub's benching could come at any time and could be permanent, with Texans coach Gary Kubiak close to moving in favor of backup T.J. Yates during the week. Yates was 3-3 as a starter in place of the injured Schaub in 2011, and led the Texans to their first franchise postseason victory before losing to Baltimore in the divisional round.
The Texans were considered a Super Bowl contender before the season and cannot withstand a fourth-straight loss, especially to the St. Louis Rams. If Schaub continues to turn the ball over, the Texans will be quick to turn to Yates in order to give the team the best chance to win.
