More Than 1.1 Million Sign Up Via Obamacare Website
The Obama administration said this morning more than 1.1 million people enrolled in a health plan on the federal exchange from October 1 to December 24, the last day consumers could sign up for coverage effective Jan. 1, 2014.
The bulk of the enrollment came in December alone after the healthcare.gov web site was largely fixed to allow more people to sign up.
'Our HealthCare.gov enrollment nearly doubled in the days before the January 1 coverage deadline compared to the first few weeks of the month,' said Marilyn Tavenner, administrator, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. 'December enrollment so far is over 7 times that of October and November. In part, this was because we met our marks on improving HealthCare.gov: the site supported 83,000 concurrent users on December 23rd alone.'
The enrollment numbers released today do not include figures from the more than 20 states that are running their own insurance exchanges.
'We are in the middle of a sustained, six-month open enrollment period that we expect to see enrollment ramp up over time, much like other historic implementation efforts we've seen in Massachusetts and Medicare Part D,' Tavenner said.
A record 2 million Americans logged into the healthcare.gov web site Monday from the extended hours offered up by the Obama administration preceding today's critical Christmas Eve deadline to enroll in health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
Americans can still sign up for coverage through the end of next March, but their coverage won't begin as soon. Consumers who begin the process of selecting a health plan after today, Christmas Eve, will be covered as of Feb. 1, the administration said today.
Under the law, millions of Americans can get a subsidy of up to $5,000 to purchase an array of health plan choices that include those sold by Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans, Aetna (AET), Cigna (CI), Humana (HUM), UnitedHealth Group (UNH), depending on the state.
