One day after announcing that right-hander Gerrit Cole would miss his next scheduled start, the Pirates placed the hard-throwing 23-year-old on the disabled list with shoulder fatigue. The move was made retroactive to June 4.

This season, Cole, one of the hardest throwers in all of baseball, has pitched to a 3.64 ERA (97 ERA+) and 2.76 K/BB ratio in 12 starts. Last season, Cole was good for an ERA+ of 111 and a K/BB ratio of 3.57 in 19 starts. The Pirates have been playing better of late, but consider this a blow, especially given their lack of rotation depth.

To take Cole's spot on the active roster and in the rotation, the Pirates have recalled lefty Jeff Locke. Locke will start Sunday against the Brewers.
