49ers suspend radio broadcaster for comments on Ray Rice
NFL
The 49ers have suspended radio broadcaster Ted Robinson for two games because of domestic violence comments he made this week, according to a tweet Wednesday night from Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee.
Robinson, 59, has been the play-by-play announcer for the team since 2009.
On Monday, he was discussing the Ray Rice assault case and said the female victim of the assault, whom Rice has since married, should accept some of the responsibility for not speaking up after she was knocked to the floor of an elevator in an Atlantic City hotel in February. Robinson said, 'That, to me, is the saddest part of it,' according to SFGate.com.
Robinson also said her decision to go through with the wedding and marry the man who assaulted her was 'pathetic.'
Rice was initially suspended two games for the assault, but footage of the incident that came to light this month from the media prompted the Ravens to release him. The league subsequently suspended him indefinitely.
Niners president Paraag Marathe issued the following statement following the suspension, via SFGate.com:
'The comments made by radio broadcaster Ted Robinson on Monday were offensive and in no way reflect the views of the San Francisco 49ers organization. We have made the decision to suspend him for the next two games. I informed Ted of our decision earlier today, and we will continue to address this matter with him internally. Our organization stands strongly against domestic violence and will not tolerate comments such as these.'
Robinson also issued a statement, apologizing for words that he described as 'careless.'
'I want to unconditionally apologize for my comments the other day. As a professional communicator, I am responsible for my words. My choice of words was careless and does not reflect my true feelings about domestic violence. I understand that the cycle of abuse keeps people in unhealthy relationships. No blame or responsibility for domestic violence should ever be placed on a victim.'
