Last week's blissful episode of was too good to last. Back on the road again after their quickie marriage, Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) start off Saturday's episode like any newlywed couple: hardly able to keep their hands off each other.

But in contrast to Claire's matrimonial happiness is Frank's (Tobias Menzies) overwhelming hopelessness at the loss of his wife. For the first time since the series kicked off, we get a look at what's going on back in 1945.

The forlorn Frank is still desperately searching for Claire. The police have no leads, much to his frustration, and with no blood, no sign of a struggle and no trace of Claire at all, the cops suspect she may have run off with a lover. 'My wife is not with another man,' Frank growls at this suggestion. Oh Frank, if only you knew.

Meanwhile, Claire and Jamie discuss their Christmas plans ('Don't suppose you hang stockings by the fire?' asks Claire. 'To dry them off, you mean?' answers Jamie). Their holiday musings are interrupted by an attack, which the Scots fend off easily.

Back in Inverness, Frank gets a lead on Claire that turns out to be fake. In his anger, he nearly beats a man to death.

Following the attack, the Scots train Claire to use a knife to protect herself. All that fighting gets Claire and Jamie frisky and they head off into the woods to make love. It's there everything starts to go downhill.

The amorous couple is discovered by two redcoats. One holds Jamie at knifepoint while the other has his way with Claire. As he grunts on top of her, she pulls out her knife and stabs him through the ribs. Jamie uses the distraction to break free of his captor, slitting his throat.

Claire goes into shock. Whether it's due to the rape or the murder, even she isn't certain. But the events wake her up: She'd forgotten about her old life and her promise to return to Frank. Now more than ever, she wants out of 18th-century Scotland.

In 1945, a woman finally suggests to Frank that Claire may have traveled through time. He insists he doesn't believe it, but as he departs Inverness, trying to leave his lost wife behind once and for all, he stops at Craigh na Dun to search for her one last time.

Jamie and the boys leave Claire behind to go hunt some redcoats. As she roams through the woods, she stumbles upon the standing stones she's sought for so long. She calls to Frank and, on the other side of time, he hears her. 'Til she's yanked away by the redcoats, that is.

Taken to Black Jack, Claire is tied up and left at the man's mercy. He cuts open her dress and proceeds to attempt to rape her. This second attempt, however, is thwarted by Jamie, who storms the fort, sword in hand. 'I'll thank you to take your hands off my wife,' he says.

What happens? We'll have to wait to find out. Outlander returns to Starz in early 2015.
