Joanna Newsom to narrate Paul Thomas Anderson's newest film 'Inherent Vice'

Over a year after news broke about Joanna Newsom's inclusion on the newest Paul Thomas Anderson film Inherent Vice - based off the Thomas Pynchon novel of the same name - what the singer-songwriter's role is has finally been made clear.

Newsom, according to The New York Times, will be playing Sortilège; an 'earth-goddess-like' character narrating the film. It'll be the first full-length film from the storied director since 2012's award-winning .

Starring Joaquin Phoenix, who was also the lead in The Master, and Benecio Del Toro, Inherent Vice takes place in 1970s Los Angeles. Drug-addled private investigator Larry 'Doc' Sportello (Phoenix) becomes entangled in a web of crimes and conspiracies after a former girlfriend asks him to help foil a plot to admit real-estate mogul Mickey Wolfmann (Eric Roberts) into a mental institution, eventually unraveling in a wave of cover-ups and subversive attempts from numerous parties. The novel explores the deep rooted counter-culture of California in the late '60s and early '70s and its place in modernist events.

The film is set for release January 9th, 2015. Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Michael K. Williams, Maya Rudolph, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Anders Holm, and Jillian Bell will also co-star in the adaptation. Radiohead member Johnny Greenwood will score the film, after previously working with Anderson to compose pieces for his films There Will Be Blood in 2007 and The Master.
