Australia jobs rise by most on record, in huge surprise

A man walks into a Centrelink, part of the Australian government's department of human services where job seekers search for employment, in a Sydney suburb, August 7, 2014.

The local dollar AUD=D4 leaped as Thursday's data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed the jobless rate fell back to 6.1 percent, again beating forecasts and reversing most of July's unexpected jump to 6.4 percent.

The series can be very volatile but the rise in employment was still massively above market forecasts for an increase of just 12,000.

The ABS did note that the rotation of its survey group included an unusually large rise in part-time employed. Yet the Statistics office said that, because of the unusually strong increase in employment estimates, it had extensively checked the data.
