Peyton Manning will be without one of his weapons for a month after the NFL suspended wide receiver Wes Welker for the first four games of the season for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy.

Welker reportedly tested positive for a banned amphetamine this summer before learning Tuesday that he lost his appeal that was heard two weeks ago. He is eligible to return to the Broncos in time for their matchup against the Jets at MetLife Stadium on Oct. 12.

Welker, one of the biggest names caught violating the drug policy, took MDMA, a banned substance, while attending the Kentucky Derby in May, according to Pro Football Talk. Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick also was recently suspended for taking MDMA.

Welker had just returned to practice this week after suffering a concussion in Denver's third preseason game against the Texans on Aug. 23. There was plenty of debate whether the 33-year-old five-time Pro Bowler, who has suffered three concussions in the past 10 months, should retire. A Denver Post online poll revealed that 63 percent of voters thought it would be best for Welker to hang it up.

He had not been medically cleared for contact, per the league's concussion protocol, but it's a moot point now.

Welker had 73 receptions for 778 yards and a career-high 10 touchdowns during the Broncos' record-setting 2013 season after thriving with the Patriots for six seasons.

The Broncos will lean more on free agent acquisition Emmanuel Sanders, Andre Caldwell and rookie Cody Latimer during Welker's absence. Pro Bowl tight end Julius Thomas will also be a focal point in the slot.

Welker, who is scheduled to be a free agent after the season, will miss games against the Colts, Chiefs, Seahawks and Cardinals.
