Celtics' Rajon Rondo has broken hand from fall at home

Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo broke his left hand and is out for six to eight weeks after surgery, the team announced Friday evening.


Rondo, 28, fell at his house Thursday night, breaking a left metacarpal bone, the Celtics said.


The news comes days before the Celtics open training camp. Rookie Marcus Smart, the No. 6 pick in June's NBA draft, likely will take over as starting point guard for the Celtics.


Rondo, a four-time All-Star, has missed 92 games over the past two seasons because of a knee ligament tear and recovery. This injury could mean he'll be back a week into the regular season.


Rondo has been the focus of trade speculation for months as the Celtics rebuild. Rondo, entering his ninth season in Boston, will become a free agent after this season.
