Former NFL kicker Rob Bironas was killed in a single-vehicle crash Saturday night in Nashville, Tenn., the Tennessean reports. He was 36.

According to Metro police, Bironas lost control of his SUV while traveling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle went off the road and hit several trees before coming to rest upside down in a drainage culvert. Bironas was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Metro police spokesman Don Aaron said there was no evidence of alcohol on the scene.

This message was posted to Bironas' Twitter account early Sunday morning: 'It's w/ heavy hearts that we confirm the passing RB # 2 We appreciate your respect for the family's privacy and your prayers at this time.'

Bironas, a former undrafted free agent out of Georgia Southern, played for the Titans from 2005-2013. He converted 85.7 percent of his attempts, which is fourth in NFL history, and had 1,032 points, just 28 points shy of Al Del Greco's team record. Bironas also had a franchise record 11 game-winning field goals, including a 60-yarded to beat the Colts in 2006.

Bironas had worked out for the Lions earlier this week, according to the Tennessean.
