MLB roundup: Kershaw beats Giants for 19th win

Clayton Kershaw outpitched Yusmeiro Petit for his major league-leading 19th win, and the Los Angeles Dodgers moved three games ahead of the Giants in the NL West with a 4-2 victory Sunday in San Francisco.



Kershaw (19-3) boosted his credentials for the NL MVP and a third Cy Young Award with another big performance in a big start. The left-hander allowed seven hits, struck out nine and walked one in eight innings, putting the Dodgers in command of the division.


Matt Kemp hit his 20th homer, and Juan Uribe and A.J. Ellis each drove in a run to back Kershaw's latest gem. Buster Posey and pinch-hitter Matt Duffy had RBI singles for San Francisco.


Kershaw lowered his majors-best ERA to 1.70, and put the Dodgers in command of the division.


'It's obviously a huge series for us, and the way we did it is pretty cool,' Kershaw said.


PIRATES 7, CUBS 3 (at Pittsburgh) - Josh Harrison started Pittsburgh's first triple play at home in 21 years and hit a tying two-run double in a six-run fifth inning.


BREWERS 9, REDS 2 (at Milwaukee) - Matt Clark hit a three-run homer in Milwaukee's five-run seventh. Todd Frazier hit his 26th homer in the sixth for Cincinnati.


CARDINALS 4, ROCKIES 1 (at St. Louis) - Rookie Marco Gonzales struck out nine, Jhonny Peralta homered and NL Central-leading St. Louis won its third straight.


RANGERS 10, BRAVES 3 (at Arlington, Texas) - Colby Lewis pitched seven innings for his 10th victory, Luis Sardinas doubled his career total with four RBI and Texas completed its first series sweep in nearly five months.


After finishing a 2-7 road trip, the Braves sit four games behind Pittsburgh for the National League's second wild card with 13 games left.


American League

ATHLETICS 4, MARINERS 0 (at Seattle) - Sam Fuld and Brandon Moss hit solo home runs, Jon Lester combined with three relievers on a seven-hitter and Oakland won consecutive games for the first time in three weeks.


The A's now hold a 1 1/2 game advantage over Kansas City and a 2 1/2 game lead over the Mariners in the race for the two wild-card spots.


RAYS 6, BLUE JAYS 5, 10 inns. (at Toronto) - Sean Rodriguez drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning.


Toronto pinch-hitter John Mayberry Jr. connected for a tying, solo home run with two outs in the ninth off Jake McGee.


TIGERS 6, INDIANS 4 (at Detroit) - Ian Kinsler hit a go-ahead homer in the seventh and Detroit swept a three-game series to increase its AL Central lead over Kansas City to 1 1/2 games.


RED SOX 8, ROYALS 4 (at Kansas City, Mo.) - Daniel Nava hit a grand slam, Xander Bogaerts added a three-run shot and Boston rallied from an early four-run deficit.
