Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams Escape US Open Heat as Quickly as ...
Serena Williams advanced to the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time this year with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Kaia Kanepi.
Although she remains the top-ranked player, Williams has struggled in the majors this year, losing in the fourth round at the Australian Open, the second round at the French Open and the third round at Wimbledon.
The relief was evident when she shouted, 'I finally made a quarterfinal this year!' during an on-court interview with Mary Joe Fernandez after the match.
Whatever pressure she was feeling dissipated in the middle of the first set. Williams said: 'I just relaxed. I said, 'Serena, whatever happens, you're still in doubles.' '
The last time Williams, the defending U.S. Open champion, did not win a Grand Slam title in a calendar year was 2011, when she missed half the season with injuries.
In the quarterfinals, she will face No. 11 seed Flavia Pennetta, who defeated No. 29 Casey Dellacqua, 7-5, 6-2. Pennetta, 32, was a semifinalist at the Open last year, her best career result in a major.
'I just like to play here and maybe that's why I play good here,' she said, adding, 'I like the city all the time. When I get to New York, I feel much better.'
