Overeem, Struve to fight Dec. 13

By Brett Okamoto | ESPN.com

A heavyweight bout between Alistair Overeem and Stefan Struve has been booked to a UFC on Fox event on Dec. 13 in Phoenix, Ariz.

UFC officials announced on Wednesday that verbal agreements are in place between the two heavyweights. The event will take place at U.S. Airways Center.

Overeem (37-14) is less than two weeks removed from a first-round knockout loss to Ben Rothwell on Sept. 5. A former champion in multiple promotions, Overeem has been knocked out in three of his last four fights.

Currently fighting out of Jackson-Winkeljohn in Albuquerque, N.M., Overeem, 34, is 2-3 since debuting with the UFC in late 2011. He expressed no concern regarding his recent skid, citing a simple technical mistake in the loss to Rothwell.

Struve (25-6) has not fought since he suffered a third-round TKO loss to Mark Hunt in March 2013. The 26-year-old was diagnosed with a bicuspid aortic valve that year and missed significant time dealing with the issue.

He was scheduled to return against Matt Mitrione at UFC 175 on July 5, but the fight was cancelled last minute when Struve fainted while warming up in his locker room.

Struve is 9-4 overall in the UFC. Only one of his 31 professional fights has gone the distance.
