Galaxy Edge Revolution in Extra Time to Capture MLS Cup
CARSON, Calif. - Robbie Keane scored in extra time, in the 111th minute, and the Los Angeles Galaxy beat the New England Revolution, 2-1, on Sunday to win the M.L.S. Cup.
Landon Donovan, who is set to retire, and Keane, who was named the league's most valuable player this season, helped the Galaxy earn the franchise's record fifth championship.
The Revolution, who used a late-season surge coinciding with the arrival of the United States World Cup star Jermaine Jones to reach the final, were seeking their first M.L.S. Cup victory. After ending Thierry Henry's M.L.S. career in the Eastern Conference finals last weekend, they relished the chance to be spoilers on Donovan's big day.
'Landon is an excellent player, a legend, and his legacy will certainly stand on its own,' New England Coach Jay Heaps said before the game. 'We're sticking to our process. All that other stuff is just noise.'
Gyasi Zardes scored in the 52nd minute for the Galaxy. Chris Tierney scored in the 79th for the Revolution.
