Colorado to see uptick in July 4 weekend travel
An estimated 665,000 Coloradans will travel 50 miles or more over the long Independence Day weekend, up a little under 1 percent from the same weekend last year, according to a forecast Thursday from AAA Colorado and a unit of Douglas County-based IHS Inc.
Colorado Fourth of July travel is expected to be up 10.5 percent from 2014's Memorial Day weekend, the report said. The Independence Day weekend typically is the busiest of the summer for travel.
The forecast -- based on research by IHS Global Insight -- covers Wednesday, July 2, through Sunday, July 6.
Just under 70,000 Coloradans are expected to fly over the long weekend, about the same as last year, the report said.
Nationwide, 41 million Americans are projected to travel over July 4, AAA/IHS said. Air fares will average about 5 percent lower than last year on the 40 most popular routes, but hotel tabs for AAA Three Diamond-rated lodgings will average 9 percent higher.
The price of regular gas currently averages $3.57 a gallon in the Denver area and $3.61 across Colorado, both a few pennies less than a year ago, AAA said.
AAA has 600,000 Colorado members.
