Sources: Harding Park gets '20 PGA, '25 Presidents Cup
San Francisco's TPC Harding Park will host two of golf's biggest events next decade.
The 2020 PGA Championship and the 2025 Presidents Cup will be played at the municipal course on Lake Merced, sources familiar with the negotiations told Golfweek on Thursday.
No dates have been set. A joint announcement with the PGA of America and the PGA Tour is scheduled for Wednesday in San Francisco.
Golf.com first reported the news of the 2020 PGA Championship heading to Harding Park.
The 2016 PGA Championship will be played before the Aug. 5-21 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but have no effect on the teams' makeup because the tournament will be held after the Official World Golf Ranking cutoff for the teams. The 2020 PGA will be played after the Summer Games in Tokyo, which are set for July 24-Aug. 9.
Wasserman Media Group consulted the PGA of America regarding the future of the PGA Championship beyond 2020, a source familiar with a presentation to the PGA board this week in Myrtle Beach, S.C., told Golfweek.
Should golf remain an Olympic sport after the 2020 Games, the PGA Championship results would affect Olympic selection, the source said. Also, the PGA could look overseas for future sites.
Reached by phone, Derek Sprague, the PGA of America's vice president, would not comment. Ty Votaw, a PGA Tour spokesman, also declined to comment.
The PGA hasn't played its championship on a municipal or state-owned course since the 1974 event at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, N.C. The 2020 PGA will be the second consecutive PGA to be played at a public facility, after the 2019 edition at Bethpage Black in New York. The other upcoming PGA sites: 2014 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.; 2015 at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis.; 2016 at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C.; and 2018 at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis.
The Tour played the 2009 Presidents Cup, a biennial match-play event that pits the U.S. touring pros against their International counterparts, at Harding Park. Next year's Presidents Cup will be in Incheon, South Korea. Sites for the other years - 2017, '19, '21 and '23 - have not been announced. Citing sources, Golfweek reported in its June 20 issue that the 2017 Presidents Cup will be held at Liberty National in Jersey City, N.J.
Harding Park, a 1925 Willie Watson design that is No. 17 on the Golfweek's Best Municipal Courses list, has played host to the Champions Tour's season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship in 2010, '11 and '13. It also was the site of the 2005 WGC-American Express Championship, which Tiger Woods won when John Daly missed a 3-foot par putt on the second hole of a playoff.
